so its been eons since i've updated (about 5 weeks) so this update looks very promising. we'll see how long it actually gets. here's what you missed in reverse chronological order
invisible children
this documentary came to norman this weekend and i almost missed it. i'm extremely glad that Kyle and I went to find out what it was about and bought the DVD (so if anybody wants to see it, let me know). This story is about the children in Uganda in Africa and just what they have to deal with every day because of the war. I've been to Zambia and from what I could tell, this area was pretty much the same Africa. Children in Africa are typically not treated well but definately are not important as adults and people really dont care about them. Currently in Sudan/Uganda the war area, children are being abducted from their homes and taken out into the bush where they are brainwashed by seeing brutal killings, desensitized, and trained as soldiers. Most children now travel to cities to sleep during the night so that the rebels do not abduct them from their homes. These children make these long journeys every night and sleep in crowded areas and then travel back to their homes during the day. All in all, if you dont know what is going on in Africa, it is very eye opening. I encourage you to see the movie or visit the website (www.invisiblechildren.com) to find out more.
The Big Event, EWB, and this past weekend
The Big Event was yesterday, on saturday. (its basically a region wide community project day that 5,000 OU students particpated with at various sites from Noble to Edmond and in Yukon.) My group, EWB (Engineers Without Borders) went to Wilson Elementary School in northern OKC and we scrubbed some stuff down and used paint stripper and i used a weed eater and ya did other school janitor related jobs. fun fun. so that was pretty much saturday. On friday, I randomly got to go with Matt McCord to the Hornets vs Raptors NBA game at the Ford Center. It was awesome and the 2nd NBA game i got to go to. it was a pretty cool time.
Engineers Without Borders
For those of you who dont know, EWB is an organization of professions or college students that teams with a community in another country to improve their quality of life by doing a projects. Projects vary from water projects, either purifying and/or constructing a water system so the natives dont have to walk miles to get water, bridge projects, or any other random thing you can think of to do to improve the quality of life in a foreign town. EWB-OU is planning on doing a bridge project in Honduras and we'll be raising money for it and stuff. We just started our chapter this year and so this is our first project. We're also doing a local project which is to help improve a playground at a youth shelter. Any donations would greatly be appreciated. We also have a snazy website that you should look at (http://coecs.ou.edu/ewb/)
Immanuel Disciple Now
A couple of weekends ago, march 24-26, was Immanuel Baptist Church Youth Group's annual Disciple Now Weekend. This was the 2nd time I got to teach, and also the 2nd time i got to teach the junior high boys. it was pretty cool, just normal stuff with JH boys. an interesting fact (besides that Cody Dunbar lead worship), Chris Gordon who is now a youth minister in chickasha, spoke. He was the youth minister in Buffalo and known as Feed. I defineatly remember going to a party at the boiling springs swimming pool where he spoke. cool stuff. Anyways, at DNow, each group gets to do a skit. last year, our skit was Lord of the Rings versus Star Wars. This year it took a new twist, we had The Matrix with Neo gettin beat then auditions for a new one lead by American Idol judges with the bruce almighty reporter guy (thats the way the cookie crumbles) as a judge. so the contestants were Uncle Ricko, Kip, and Napolean Dynamite. good stuff. needless to say, Napolean won and defeated Mr. Smith. yeah nice huh? I'm really sure you wanted to know all that :P
Glorieta - Spring Break
Its been a long time since spring break, but i thought that i'd at least try to give an update of what went down and what i learned. Howard Hendricks spoke and it was good stuff. He is a professor at the seminary in Dallas. He told us many stories of how his discipling has influenced so many others and stories like that. He told of one of his grade school teachers who prayed for each of her students before class and from that class many godly men and women have came. Yeah so theres alot more that i learned from many more sessions, including on about using you twenties to train and wow there was alot in that dialogue. i got lots and lots of notes from it and i need to review it. anyways it was awesome stuff. Oh!! I managed to snowboard 2 days and not break anything. It was amazing. I did fall and hurt my head badly the first day and then fell on my bum alot the next day so it hurt. fun stuff. i miss boarding. yeah well thats all about that for now
The End
so thats everything i can remember. i really should finish my quantum now.
